Retirement destination rankings are the junk food of this industry: cheap to produce, briefly satisfying, and built almost entirely from photographs. Having spent my working life watching Asian wealth move in the opposite direction — Asian families buying European and Caribbean options — I bring a specific bias to the question of Westerners retiring east: the visa is the product. The beach is real everywhere; what differs is whether you are allowed to stay on it at 78, on what terms, and what happens when your health changes. Ranked on that basis:
1. Malaysia — the infrastructure pick
Malaysia's MM2H programme was the region's gold standard for two decades, and even after the 2021 tightening — liquid assets around MYR 1.5 million (≈ USD 345,000), a monthly income requirement, a Malaysian fixed deposit — it remains the most complete package in Asia: long renewable passes, first-world private healthcare in Kuala Lumpur and Penang at a fraction of Western cost, English as the lingua franca of medicine and law, and genuinely livable cities. The thresholds price out the modest retiree the old MM2H welcomed, which is exactly why the programme now works: it is calibrated to people who can fund a two-decade retirement, and its holders rarely leave.
2. Thailand — the flexible pick
Thailand offers more retirement doors than any neighbour: the classic retirement visa on modest deposit-or-income tests, the Long-Term Resident visa's Wealthy Pensioner track (USD 40,000-a-year pension paired with a USD 250,000 Thai asset requirement, or a USD 80,000 pension with no asset test), and the Elite/Privilege membership route from roughly USD 25,000 for those who prefer to simply pay. Bangkok's private hospitals are the best in Southeast Asia. The caveats are chronic rather than acute: annual renewals and reporting on the basic routes, immigration policy that shifts with politics, and — new since 2024 — a tax regime that now looks harder at remitted foreign income. Structure before you ship the furniture.
3. The Philippines — the value pick
The SRRV remains the honest bargain of Asian retirement: deposits from USD 15,000–30,000 for over-50s (pension-backed files at the low end), a genuinely permanent multi-entry status run by a dedicated retirement authority, English everywhere, and the region's warmest cultural fit for Western retirees. The trade-offs are equally honest: healthcare quality drops steeply outside Manila and Cebu, infrastructure tests patience, and typhoon and seismic risk are facts of geography. The SRRV's permanence — no annual revalidation of your right to remain — is worth more than most rankings price in.
4. Indonesia (Bali) — the lifestyle pick, now with a real visa
For years Bali retirement ran on visa runs and workarounds; the Second Home visa (IDR 2 billion, ≈ USD 126,000 on deposit, or a higher-value property route) and the retirement KITAS for over-55s finally gave it legitimate long-stay architecture. Bali's expat infrastructure is unmatched in beauty and community; its hospitals are not where you want a cardiac event. The candid pattern among long-stayers: Bali for the good decade, Malaysia or home for the harder one.
5. Sri Lanka — the contrarian pick
The My Dream Home visa (55+, USD 15,000 deposit plus USD 1,500 monthly remittance) prices a beautiful, complicated country at the bottom of the market. Post-crisis stabilisation has been real but remains fragile; this is a choice for retirees with risk tolerance and an existing relationship with the island, not a first landing.
The three questions that outrank the ranking
Healthcare at 80, not 65. Rank destinations by their tertiary hospitals and evacuation insurance costs, because the cheerful clinic that handles your check-up does not handle your stroke. Security of tenure. A permanent status (SRRV, MM2H's long passes) beats a cheaper annual one every time immigration policy twitches. Tax on your pension. Thailand's remittance rules, Malaysia's territorial system and your home country's treaty network produce wildly different net outcomes on identical incomes — the comparison nobody does from the beach photos. Our country dossiers carry the visa mechanics for each, verified and dated.
