Country overview

Canada consistently ranks among the world's most liveable countries, offering universal healthcare, high-quality public education, clean cities, and extraordinary natural landscapes. Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal are world-class multicultural metros. The country is politically stable, with a strong rule of law and one of the most welcoming immigration policies of any developed nation. Winters are severe in most of the country; British Columbia's coast is notably milder.

Tax overview

Federal income tax up to 33%; provincial tax adds 8–21%. Combined top marginal rates reach 53% in Ontario and Quebec. Capital gains are 50% included in income (effective rate ~27% federally). No wealth tax. Tax treaties with most major nations.

Safety

Excellent — Canada has very low rates of violent crime by G7 standards. Cities are generally safe, including after dark in most districts. Petty crime and property crime exist in urban centres but serious violent crime is rare.

Healthcare

Universal single-payer healthcare (provincial systems) covers all residents at no direct cost. Wait times for specialist care and elective procedures can be long. Private supplemental insurance covers dental, vision, and prescription drugs.

Education

Public K–12 education is universally funded and of high quality. Universities such as University of Toronto, McGill, UBC, and Waterloo rank globally and have strong research output. Tuition is significantly lower than the US for domestic students.

Investment routes

Canada's most cost-effective investor residency is via Provincial Nominee Program (PNP) Business Streams, with minimum investments from CAD 150,000 depending on province. The federal Start-Up Visa is currently being reworked — the program was capped and paused for new intake in 2024 pending a restructure.

Work permits

Canada has one of the world's most structured and welcoming temporary work permit systems. Permits are tied to specific employers (LMIA-required) or are open (LMIA-exempt). International graduates and skilled workers benefit from streamlined pathways. Intracompany transferees and US/Mexico nationals benefit from CUSMA (successor to NAFTA) provisions.

LMIA-Based Work Permit

EmployerSpouse: Can work

Employer must obtain a Labour Market Impact Assessment proving no qualified Canadian candidate is available. Standard route for most employer-sponsored positions.

CUSMA (formerly NAFTA) Work Permit

EmployerSpouse: Can work

Expedited work authorisation for US and Mexican nationals in specific professional categories (over 60 professions). No LMIA required, processed at the port of entry.

Intracompany Transfer (ICT)

EmployerSpouse: Can work

For executives, senior managers, and specialised knowledge workers transferring from a related foreign entity. Initial permit up to 3 years; extendable.

Start-Up Visa Work Permit

SelfSpouse: Can work

Bridging work permit for Start-Up Visa applicants while permanent residency is processed. Requires commitment from designated VC, angel group, or business incubator.

Skills migration

Express Entry is Canada's flagship immigration system, managing applications for the Federal Skilled Worker Program, Federal Skilled Trades Program, and Canadian Experience Class. Candidates are scored on the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) and the top-ranked are invited in regular draws. Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs) offer additional pathways aligned with each province's economic needs.

Economic opportunity

Canada is a G7 economy with a GDP of approximately CAD 3 trillion. It is resource-rich (oil, gas, minerals, timber) and has a growing technology sector centred in Toronto, Vancouver, and Waterloo. The country's proximity to the US and the CUSMA free trade agreement make it a strategic hub for North American market access.

Toronto's MaRS Discovery District and Vancouver's tech ecosystem are growing hubs. SR&ED (Scientific Research and Experimental Development) tax credits offer significant incentives for R&D-intensive businesses. Business incorporation is straightforward and provincial.

Who this programme suits

Canada is ideal for skilled professionals and families seeking a stable, multicultural, English-speaking country with a clear, merit-based route to permanent residency and citizenship. It is particularly compelling for Indian tech professionals facing multi-decade US green card waits, as Canada's PR timelines are dramatically shorter.

Indian software engineers and IT professionals frustrated by H-1B lottery and EB-2/EB-3 backlogs

Healthcare professionals (nurses, doctors, allied health) seeking strong labour demand

Entrepreneurs with an innovative tech or scalable business idea targeting the Start-Up Visa

HNW families seeking stable English-speaking residency with excellent schooling

UK and European professionals seeking North American presence post-Brexit

Investors seeking the Quebec Investor Program passive investment route

Immigration pathways

Canada has no single route. A federal points system, eleven provincial programmes and a province that selects its own immigrants each work differently — and a provincial nomination adds 600 CRS points, which is usually the decisive move for a mid-range score.
